Artwork Donated to NSMC Special Care Nursery at Salem Hospital

NSMC Special Care Nursery Installation

We are excited to announce that we now have a permanent art installation of our baby portraits on display at North Shore Medical Center’s (NSMC) Salem Hospital!

A series of seven large-scale black & white newborn portraits now adorn the newly renovated Special Care Nursery. With the help of key NSMC personnel, together we selected images that would be calming to the families that visit this unit, who come to receive extra care during the first few days of a baby’s life.

The art installation project for the Special Care Nursery has been in the works since the fall of 2014. Roughly six months later, the official installation took place on March 25th, 2015. A total of seven framed 20×20″ float-mount fine art photographs now grace the entryway and patient care rooms in the new wing. On the day of the installation, several nurses gathered round to ooh and ahh over the baby portraits and to fall in love with their favorites! It was an exciting day for all of us and one that marked a collaborative effort between the studio, the NSMC Development office, and the Special Care Nursery.

Given the nature of this exhibition being a permanent installation in a heath care institution, it was essential for us (and for the healthcare HIPPA laws) to receive written permission from the families whose images were included. Once the portraits were selected by the committee, we went about the process to contact the families to request proper permission. Much to our delight, not only did we receive 100% agreement, but the parents were positively thrilled to be selected! So it is as exciting to them as it is to us to be featured on the walls at the hospital.

Special Care Nursery staff member, Suzanne Nevins, tells me how thrilled she is to have the work on the walls, and that this one was her favorite!

Coinciding with the installation and the opening of the new wing, NSMC ran a feature on the Special Care Nursery in the Winter 2015 issue of their publication, The Healthy Life. Included in the publication was a sidebar article talking about the donated art for the renovated unit. To read the entire article, click here for the pdf.

We also have big plans to donate another series of portraits, those of babies and toddlers, to be permanently installed in The Birthplace at NSMC sometime later this year. The images to be selected for this next installation are currently under review by the selection committee at Salem Hospital to what is most suitable for those walls. The Birthplace installation is expected to feature brighter, more colorful imagery, designed to bring a smile to a happy environment!
