Who was Lydia Pinkham?
The history of this building is fascinating. Lydia Pinkham was one of the earliest American women entrepreneurs. She started her business in 1875 launching a medicinal potion to cure the ills of women’s monthly complaints. During the Victorian era when women rarely trusted their male doctors, women turned to domestic herbal remedies from their friends and neighbors. Her “vegetable compound” was created from a combination of herbal ingredients and 19% alcohol. Needless to say, the product succeeded and was privately manufactured long after Lydia’s death, until the company was sold in 1968. You can still buy the product in a modified form today on amazon.
